Google Cloud Platform: the quiet third option for West Africa
When Ghanaian business leaders talk about the cloud, two names dominate the conversation: Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. The third giant — Google Cloud Platform, or GCP — is often an afterthought. That is a mistake. For certain kinds of workloads, particularly those involving data, analytics, and artificial intelligence, GCP is quietly one of the most powerful platforms in the industry, and for businesses already living on Google Workspace, it is a natural extension.
Let us look at what Google Cloud actually offers, where it shines, and when a Ghanaian business should seriously consider making it part of their cloud strategy.
A Different Kind of Cloud
Google built GCP on the same infrastructure that powers Gmail, YouTube, Google Search, and Google Maps — four of the busiest systems on the planet. That inheritance gives GCP some distinctive strengths. Google’s internal engineering culture has always prioritised global-scale distributed systems, ultra-fast networking, and data-driven decision-making. When you use GCP, you get access to that legacy.
It also means GCP tends to have opinions. Where AWS offers hundreds of services and leaves you to wire them together, Google often pushes you toward a smaller number of highly integrated platforms that do a lot out of the box.
Where GCP Is the Strongest
GCP is arguably the industry leader in a few areas that matter increasingly to modern business.
Data analytics. Google’s BigQuery is a cloud data warehouse that can query enormous datasets in seconds without you having to manage servers or clusters. For Ghanaian businesses sitting on years of transactional data, customer behaviour logs, or operational metrics, BigQuery can unlock insights in ways that traditional databases simply cannot match. Pricing is pay-per-query, which means small businesses can start cheaply.
Machine learning and AI. Google’s Vertex AI is a unified platform for building and deploying machine learning models, including integrations with Gemini, Google’s family of foundation models. This is the same technology powering Google’s own products, made available to any business that wants to build custom AI.
Kubernetes and containers. Google invented Kubernetes, the open-source orchestration system now used by almost every modern cloud-native application. Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) remains the most mature managed Kubernetes service in the industry.
Global networking. Google’s private network reaches almost everywhere in the world, providing low-latency connectivity that is particularly strong for businesses serving a global audience.
Integration With Google Workspace
If your business already runs on Google Workspace — Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Meet — then GCP integrates naturally. Your user identities, your authentication, and your collaboration tools extend seamlessly into the cloud platform. This reduces friction and simplifies both access management and billing for a large category of Ghanaian SMEs.
For businesses that have adopted Google Workspace because of its simplicity, the progression into GCP for cloud infrastructure can feel much more comfortable than learning an entirely new ecosystem.
Where GCP Is Not Always the Right Fit
GCP has fewer services than AWS and, for some traditional enterprise workloads, a less mature ecosystem than Azure. If your business is heavily Microsoft-based — Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft SQL Server — Azure remains the more natural home. If your team’s skills are AWS-first and you can hire AWS engineers easily, retraining for GCP may be an avoidable cost.
Google has also historically had fewer regions than AWS and Azure, though the gap has narrowed considerably, with African presence growing and global coverage expanding each year.
Practical First Projects
A good first GCP project for a Ghanaian business is often a data analytics pilot. Take a dataset you already have — sales history, customer transactions, operational logs — and load it into BigQuery. Build a simple dashboard in Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio). Within days, you can show your leadership team insights they have never seen before, using tools that cost very little to start with.
Another strong first project is deploying a small containerised application on Google Cloud Run, a serverless platform for running containers without managing infrastructure. You pay only while the code is actually running, which makes it ideal for experimentation.
The Bottom Line
Google Cloud is not as widely adopted in Ghana as Azure or AWS, but it offers real, tangible advantages in data, analytics, machine learning, and Google Workspace integration. Smart Ghanaian businesses do not need to pick one cloud and worship it forever. They evaluate honestly, pick the right tool for the right job, and keep their options open. For many teams, the right strategy is to run core business workloads on Azure or AWS while using GCP as their data and AI layer.
Let’s Have a Conversation
If you would like to explore whether Google Cloud Platform fits your business — especially if you are working with data, analytics, or AI — let’s have a conversation. I can help you evaluate GCP alongside other platforms and design a first project that is practical, affordable, and informative.
